The Best German Shepherd Mixes
German Shepherds are some of the most popular dog breeds in the world. They are intensely loyal, athletic, highly intelligent, and loving – all the best qualities of a dog. That is why they are also some of the most popular breeds to cross.
We have seen German Shepherds mixed with large and small dog breeds. They are more common than you think. Although there are many crosses with German Shepherds, these are the most popular.
1. Pastor Golden
Parents: Mix of the Golden Retriever and the German Shepherd.
The Golden Shepherd or Golden Shepherd combines the playful attitude of a Golden Retriever with the devotion and athleticism of a German Shepherd. Physically, they resemble a shepherd with the Golden’s characteristic golden coat.
Given how smart the German Shepherd and Golden Retriever are, you can expect this hybrid to be just as smart, if not smarter! Parents are the third and fourth most intelligent dog breeds, respectively.
They are likely to be very energetic and lively dogs without the intense work ethic of a German Shepherd. They are the perfect dogs to keep up with the rowdy kids in the house!
2. Pastor Chow
Parents: Chow Chow and German Shepherd mix.
The combination of the Chinese Chow Chow and the German Shepherd gives you the exotic Shepherd Chow. These mixes are playful by nature, but have strong protective instincts.
They are big, fluffy dogs that you will want to cuddle, but they come with a lot of responsibilities. Because they are so heavy, you will have to spend quite a bit of time grooming your Shepherd Chow.
These dogs can be independent minded (thanks to the Chow side), they will thrive on firm and consistent positive reinforcement. Also, they are better suited for a large house with a large yard.
3. Sheprador
Parents: Labrador and German Shepherd mix.
The Sheprador is the mix of the two most popular dog breeds in America: the Labrador Retriever and the German Shepherd. There is no way you can go wrong with a couple like this.
Labradors are patient and loving dogs. Not only do they tend to inherit the alertness of the German Shepherd, but also the outgoing personality of the Labrador.
They can be an amazing companion with a calm demeanor when needed. They are perfect for all types of people and families.
4. Shepsky
Parents: Siberian husky and German shepherd mix.
The German Shepherd Husky mix is one of the best large mixed dog breeds.
The Shepsky is one of the most popular large mixed dog breeds in the world. They have the playful and energetic nature of the Siberian Husky, but also the obedience of a German Shepherd.
Due to their fluffy coats and lively temperaments, they are not the most adaptable designer dogs. They do not do well in hot climates and are not good for small spaces.
Given the right needs, the Shepsky will thrive as a family dog in the right environment. They are everything one would want in a company.
5. Shepweiler
Parents: Rottweiler and German Shepherd mix.
The Shepweiler is a cross between two iconic German dog breeds: the Rottweiler and the German Shepherd. They are both known to be excellent watchdogs, ensuring that Shepweilers are as well.
These dogs are powerful and intelligent, as would be expected from parent breeds. With proper obedience training, they are quite versatile dogs.
Just be sure to use firm and consistent positive reinforcement when training your Shepweiler.
6. Shepkita
Parents: Akita Inu and German Shepherd mix.
The Shepkita (also known as the Akita Shepherd) is truly a special dog, crossing the pride of Japan and Germany. In fact, the Akita Inu is Japan’s official breed of dog.
The two parent races are known for their independent personalities and immense devotion. They are protective by nature and the Shepkita is also protective.
Shepkites will develop a strong bond with the family, so expect to spend a lot of time raising these wonderful German Shepherd mixes.
7. Pastor Pit
Parents: Pit Bull and German Shepherd mix.
Keep in mind that the Pit Bull is not a specific breed, but rather refers to a group of bullies.
Both the German Shepherd and the Pit Bull top the list of the most aggressive and “dangerous” dog breeds. Although with proper socialization, parental breeds (including the Pit Shepherd) can become gentle family dogs.
These dogs are powerful and dominant. Therefore, they will need a lot of socialization, positive reinforcement training, and establishing dominance early on.
8. Saint German
Parents: Mix of Saint Bernard and German Shepherd.
The Saint Shepherd or Saint German is a hybrid of the German Shepherd and the Saint Bernard. Similar to the New Shepherd, these pooches are friendly and great to have around children.
Thanks to the Saint Bernard, these dogs have a very laid-back personality and are generally easy to train. Because they are such large dogs, socialization training is essential from the start.
They make excellent watchdogs, but even better family dogs. Try the San Pastor and you will see why people love them so much.
9. Shollie
Parents: Collie and German Shepherd mix.
The Shollie is a relatively rare designer dog, given the popularity of the parent breeds. Both the German Shepherd and the Collie are herding dogs, which means the Shollie could thrive in that role as well.
They do very well with obedience training and have one of the highest obediences and working intelligence among mixed dog breeds.
For families, the Shollie is perfect. They have retained the protective and loyal nature of the German Shepherd, while maintaining the affection and dignity of the Collie.
10. Beagle Shepherd
Parents: Beagle and German Shepherd mix.
The Beagle Shepherd is a breed of dog that I have had the owner live with. From personal experience, this German Shepherd and Beagle mix is a very sweet and faithful company.
There is no denying the loyalty of a Beagle Shepherd as they will stick by your side through almost everything. They can be a bit protective, but enough to be a formidable watchdog.
They require a bit of exercise. So if you are an active person or live with an active family, the Beagle Shepherd may be perfect for you.
11. Pastor Doberman
Parents: Doberman and German Shepherd mix.
The Doberman Shepherd crosses the two most powerful dog breeds in Germany: the Doberman Pinscher and the German Shepherd. If you thought the Shepweiler was a high-powered German hybrid, these dogs are probably on another level.
These dogs can be huge and grow over 45kg. With a dog of that size, it is absolutely crucial to establish dominance at home very early.
Doberman Shepherds can be a bit stubborn from time to time, but in general they are very easy to train because they are very intelligent.
12. Malinois X
Parents: Belgian Malinois and German Shepherd mix.
The Malinois X is a fairly new hybrid dog breed that is used in the military and the police. Both parents, the Belgian Malinois and the German Shepherd, are very similar dogs.
Imagine a slightly smaller but more energetic German Shepherd and you have the Belgian Malinois. Now when you combine the two, you get an ultra energetic protector.
These are high maintenance dogs that require a ton of physical and mental activity on a daily basis. This cross is not recommended for a typical family. They require serious work.
13. Boxer Shepherd
Parents: Boxer and German Shepherd mix.
The Boxer Shepherd is really a handsome German Shepherd mix. They are as energetic and affectionate as you would expect from the boxer hybrid.
To keep these mixed dogs in check, you will need to keep them on top of their physical exercise regimen. Providing them with a suitable outlet is the only way to raise a happy and healthy Boxer Shepherd.
They are extremely intelligent pooches, but they can also make great family dogs. They are a bit protective and can easily handle the role of watchdog around the house.
14. Danish Shepherd
Parents: Great Dane and German Shepherd mix.
The Danish Shepherd is the mix of the Great Dane and the German Shepherd. Due to the Great Dane’s size, the Danish Shepherd is quite large, which makes them excellent watchdogs and an incredible companion.
Depending on the lineage, these dogs can have a short or medium coat. The Danish Shepherd most likely has a double coat, so save for dealing with heavy shedding during the spring and fall.
If you are looking for a great companion and home keeper, look no further. Only the massive size of these dogs can scare off potential intruders.
15. American Bulldog Shepherd
Parents: Mix of the American Bulldog and the German Shepherd.
The American Bulldog Shepherd is a relatively new design dog that combines the resistance of the Bulldog and the German Shepherd. Although they are medium-sized dogs, they have a robust build with a lot of power.
If you are allergic to the danger of dogs, then this is not the German Shepherd mix for you. Both parents are notoriously heavy and so is the hybrid.
There are very few American bulldog herders in the world, but we know that they will be devoted, loving, and protective.
I love the animals. Reading and writing about them, their customs, their peculiarities or the attention they require is exciting, and I also believe that it makes us better people. I share articles that solve the questions that dog caregivers face on a daily basis.
